20 Books To Read if You Love Pride and Prejudice
Sense and Sensibility
“Sense and Sensibility” is the story of two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who have contrasting temperaments. On the surface Elinor, the older sister represents sense or reason while Marianne represents sensibility or emotion, however, upon closer examination, we find that they both exhibit varying aspects of each characteristic. A classic coming of age story “Sense and Sensibility” was Jane Austen’s first published novel.
Daniel Deronda
Searching for his life’s purpose, young Daniel Deronda is immediately attracted to the beautiful but shallow Gwendolen Harleth during a chance meeting at a casino. As they pursue separate journeys of self-discovery, culminating in Daniel’s discovery of his Jewish heritage, Daniel and Gwendolen reveal much about the depth of their characters and the circumstances that have influenced their lives.
Persuasion
In this brilliant satire of vanity and pretension, Jane Austen tells the story of Anne Elliot, who was persuaded by a friend to break an engagement with a man she loves. What happens when they encounter each other again is movingly told in Jane Austen’s last completed novel. Set in the fashionable societies of Lyme Regis and Bath, Persuasion is a brilliant satire of vanity and pretension, but, above all, it is a love story tinged with the heartache of missed opportunities.

Jane Eyre

Rebecca
The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where our heroine is swept off her feet by the dashing widower Maxim de Winter and his sudden marriage proposal. Orphaned and working as a lady’s maid, she can barely believe her luck. However, when they arrive at his massive country estate, she realizes how large a shadow his late wife will cast over their lives–presenting her with a lingering evil that threatens to destroy their marriage from beyond the grave.
Emma
“Emma” is the story of Emma Woodhouse, a young girl from a good home that does not need the financial support of a husband and is determined not to marry. Emma, however, is not opposed to marriage for others and is determined to play matchmaker between several local citizens. Despite Emma’s resolve not to marry, she finds herself attracted to several men throughout the book and considers the prospect of marriage.
Three Men in a Boat
Three Men in a Boat, published in 1889, became an instant success and has never been out of print. In its first twenty years alone, the book sold over a million copies worldwide. George and Harris, and Montmorency take a boat trip on the Thames. Much hilarity ensues.
North and South
Elizabeth Gaskell’s skillful narrative uses an unusual love story to show how personal and public lives were woven together in a newly industrial society. This book is a tale of hard-won triumphs – rational thought over prejudice and humane care over blind deference to the market. Readers in the twenty-first century will find themselves absorbed as this Victorian novel traces the origins of problems and possibilities that are still challenging a hundred and fifty years later: the complex public and private relationships between men and women of different classes.
Longbourn
In this irresistibly imagined belowstairs answer to Pride and Prejudice, the servants take center stage. Sarah, the orphaned housemaid, spends her days scrubbing the laundry, polishing the floors, and emptying the chamber pots for the Bennet household. But there is just as much romance, heartbreak, and intrigue downstairs at Longbourn as there is upstairs. When a mysterious new footman arrives, the orderly realm of the servants’ hall threatens to be ultimately, perhaps irrevocably, upended.
Austenland: A Novel
Jane Hayes is a young New Yorker with a real romantic problem: no man she meets can compare to her one true love-Mr. Darcy from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. But when a wealthy relative bequeaths her a trip to an English resort for Austen fanatics, Jane’s fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency-era gentleman suddenly become more real than she ever could have imagined.
My Fair Gentleman
My Fair Lady with a regency twist! Jack Eliot dreams of being the captain of his ship. But then his grandfather, the Earl of Stansworth, names Jack as his heir — with a caveat. Jack must impress the aristocracy, or else his mother and sister will remain in poverty. Can a rough-and-tumble captain be transformed into a gentleman of society?
Lizzy and Jane
Lizzy and Jane couldn’t be further from Jane Austen’s famous sisters, after whom they were named. But, as Elizabeth pours her renewed energy into her sister’s care and her burgeoning interest in Nick, Jane’s handsome coworker, her life begins to evolve from the singular pursuit of her dream into the beautiful world of family, food, literature, and love that was shattered when she and Jane lost their mother. Will she stay and become Lizzy to her sister Jane—and Elizabeth to Nick’s Mr. Darcy—or will she return to the life she has worked so hard to create?
The Convenient Marriage
Horatia Winwood is simply helping her family when the Earl of Rule proposes marriage to her sister Lizzie. Horatia offers herself instead. Her sister is already in love with someone else, and Horatia is willing to sacrifice herself for her family’s happiness. Of course, everyone knows she’s no beauty, but she’ll do her best to keep out of the Earl’s way and make him a good wife. And then the Earl’s archenemy, Sir Robert, sets out to ruin her reputation… I love every single book written by Georgette Heyer. This is a must-read!
Ayesha at Last
A modern-day Muslim Pride and Prejudice for a new generation of love. Ayesha Shamsi has a lot going on. She cast her dreams of being a poet aside to take a teaching job to pay off her debts to her wealthy uncle. She lives with her boisterous Muslim family and is constantly reminded that her flighty younger cousin, Hafsa, is close to rejecting her one hundredth marriage proposal. Though Ayesha is lonely, she doesn’t want an arranged marriage. Then she meets Khalid, who is just as intelligent and handsome as he is conservative and judgmental. Nevertheless, she is irritatingly attracted to someone who looks down on her choices and dresses as he belongs in the seventh century.
Wuthering Heights
In the relationship of Cathy and Heathcliff, and the wild, bleak Yorkshire Moors of its setting, Wuthering Heights creates a world of its own, conceived with a disregard for convention, an instinct for poetry, and for the dark depths of human psychology that make it one of the greatest novels of passion ever written.
To the Lighthouse
Every summer, the Ramsays visit their summer home on the beautiful Isle of Skye, surrounded by the excitement and chatter of family and friends, mirroring Virginia Woolf’s joyful holidays of her youth. But as time passes, and in the wake of the First World War, the transience of life becomes ever more apparent through the vignette of the thoughts and observations of the novel’s disparate cast.
Arabella
I saved the best for last. I don’t think I can properly describe how much I absolutely love every single Georgette Heyer book. I got hooked on them in Middle School and started a lifelong love for historical romances. Arabella is one of the best Georgette Heyer books. Perfectly romantic and absolutely hilarious. You MUST read this book!
Arabella, the daughter of an impoverished country parson, dreams of a new life in London. But her beauty and charm will only get her so far—and when Arabella embarks on her first London season armed with nothing but a benevolent godmother and her own notoriously short temper, she quickly runs afoul of Robert Beaumaris.
