The 20 Things People Used To Cheap Out On, But Now They Swear by the Expensive Versions

When budgeting and saving money, cutting corners wherever possible is tempting.

However, there are some items that are just worth the splurge. I’ve done some serious research involving asking people and reading people’s comments online to find out what people used to cheap out on, switched to the more expensive versions, and encourage everyone to do the same.

Proceed with caution; there is some serious splurge potential ahead.

Cheese

One person’s dirty little secret? Budgeting for delicious cheeses right alongside housing and utilities. And honestly, it makes sense once you understand what real cheese actually tastes like.

There’s a big difference between actual cheese and sliced American cheese, or blocks of sharp yellow cheddar.

And when it comes to Parmesan? Once you go Reggiano, you don’t go backiano. Straight-up facts.

Bed Sheets

A good night’s sleep sets the tone for the day. Many people never give much thought to what’s on their bed; if the sheets wore out, they’d just grab a cheap new set and move on.

But once introduced to high thread count flannel sheets, there’s no going back.

One person went all the way to 800-thread-count Egyptian Cotton sheets. Expensive? Sure. But it’s like sleeping in a cloud.

Beyond comfort, quality sheets are also more cost-effective since they’ll last for years.

Underwear

Good quality underwear makes you feel like you’re wearing nothing at all.

Many people wear cheap underwear until it falls apart … until they try an expensive pair and never look back. It’s worth the price tag.

Pillows

Pillows are so important. After switching to a top-of-the-line pillow, sleep quality can increase dramatically.

One person’s wife was tossing and turning for weeks. After investing in premium pillows, she began averaging 10 to 12 hours of sleep a day and still raves about how great her pillow is.

Bras

Good quality, properly fitted bras make a significant difference.

Since shopping at a local bra boutique, many women have discovered that amazing, and yes, expensive, bras exist that are supportive, comfortable, and attractive all at once.

Spending $70 on a single bra might give your younger self a heart attack, but getting through the day without bulges, ride-ups, shoulder indents, or spillage makes it entirely worth it.

Toothbrushes

Electric toothbrushes, particularly Sonicare vibrating ones, are a game-changer for oral health.

The freshness after the first use is unforgettable, dentists notice significantly less plaque buildup, and cavities become far less frequent.

Someone who used to have 2 to 3 cavities filled every six months now gets just one filled every other year. Oral health matters. Take care of your smile.

Syrup

Many people grow up buying cheap, no-name high fructose corn syrup… until they try real maple syrup for the first time and are completely ruined for anything else. If real maple syrup isn’t available, some people would simply rather skip pancakes altogether.

Yes, it’s expensive.

But it’s that good.

Toilet Paper

It’s absolutely worth spending extra on the good stuff.

Some universities supply ultra-thin, wrapping-paper-quality toilet paper in every washroom on campus, so thin that students consider bringing their own from home. Once you try a wipe or bidet, your life will be changed forever.

Jeans

The difference between a $20 pair of jeans and a $200 pair is hard to describe until you feel it.

One person, raised on budget denim, was convinced by a friend to try on a high-end pair at Nordstrom, fully expecting to walk away unimpressed.

Instead, it felt like the jeans were cast from a mold of their own body. Three minutes later, they paid and have never been able to settle for cheaper jeans again.

Amazon Prime

Waiting weeks for free standard shipping feels like a reasonable tradeoff,  until you experience two-day Prime delivery.

Once you try it, going back to slow, free shipping feels genuinely painful. Many people end up buying almost everything except food through Prime, from granite polish to sneakers to office supplies. It’s addictive.

Coffee

Many people buy the cheapest coffee brands available and use creamer to mask the flavor, not realizing they’ve been doing it wrong the whole time.

Good quality coffee hits differently. Once you taste the real thing, budget brands just don’t cut it anymore.

Shaving Cream

Spending $1 on a can of shaving cream seems perfectly reasonable until the store runs out and you’re forced to buy a $10 can instead. The difference is immediately noticeable.

Once you experience a quality shave, cheap shaving cream loses its appeal entirely.

Tools

Quality tools get the job done quickly without breaking the tool, damaging the project, or injuring your hands. And they’ll last more than a lifetime. Some people end up with $60,000 to $100,000 worth of tools sitting in their garages… and consider them a worthwhile investment.

Computer Chairs

After years of using the same budget chair, switching to a quality gaming chair, which can run around $400,  can feel like a revelation. The difference in posture alone is unreal. Comfort over everything.

Makeup

Higher quality makeup not only performs better, but it also lasts longer, both when applied and in terms of how often you need to repurchase it. The product is much denser in pigmentation, so you need to apply much less.

Since makeup goes on your face, investing in quality products with a safe ingredient list is always the smart move.

Shoes

The difference between a cheap $14 pair of shoes and a well-made pair in the $80 to $120 range is genuinely amazing. And when it comes to heels, nothing kills the day more than hard, painful, cheap ones. Good shoes put a pep in your step,  literally. And it saves your back and knees.

Dress Shirts

Growing up buying cheap dress shirts and thinking the way they aged and came out of the dryer was just normal is a common experience.

Then comes the $50 to $100 non-iron shirt from a proper suit shop, and everything changes. They come out of the dryer needing no ironing if removed promptly. The material is thicker and hangs better. They last for years. The cloth doesn’t shrink as much. The color stays longer.

Honey

Everything else is basically just corn syrup. Once you try raw honey, especially the variety available at a farmers’ market, spending $20 for a few jars of the good stuff feels completely reasonable.

The different varieties taste surprisingly distinct from one another, and there’s simply no going back to the generic stuff.

Tampons

The difference between a cardboard applicator tampon and a quality plastic applicator, like the Tampax Pearl, is dramatic.

Cardboard applicators are universally considered the devil’s work. With all the cramps and mood swings that come with a period, investing in good-quality, comfortable menstrual products just makes sense.

Vacuums

For pet owners, especially those with allergic partners, a quality vacuum like the Dyson Animal is a life-changer. The amount of dust and fur it pulls up is unbelievable, and allergy symptoms can disappear almost entirely. Seven years in, with zero problems, the verdict is clear: never going back.

While choosing the cheapest option when making purchases may be tempting, certain things are genuinely worth investing in. When it comes to safety, health, and comfort, prioritizing quality over price isn’t splurging; it’s smart spending.
