How Trends Influence People To Spend More Money and How To Make It Stop

One of the main reasons that people spend money when they don’t want to is due to trends. When we see trends, we inherently feel societal pressure to go along with them.

Sometimes, we don’t even need to buy into a trend as it doesn’t add any value to our lives, but we still end up spending money on trendy items in any way because we feel like we need to fit in with everybody else.

It can be anything from clothes to decor and even diets or supplements. Read on to learn more about how you can prevent yourself from buying into trends.

Do Research

If there is something that you want to buy because it is trending at the moment, be sure to do your research first. It’s so easy to purchase things nowadays with easy access to online shopping, and this is not always a good thing. Sometimes, we just buy things impulsively, without thinking if the item is needed or going to add value to our lives.

Buy With Intention

Before impulsively buying something that you desire, be sure to wait a few days before. By halting before a purchase, you give yourself the necessary time to process the purchase and figure out if it’s something that you need rather than something that’s been thrown in your face by the algorithm/good marketing schemes.

Remind Yourself That Trends Are Cyclical

A lot of things in life are cyclical, and that includes fashion trends, food trends, and even vacation trends. At any given moment, there’s always something that may be trending hard, but it’s never too long before it gets replaced by something new.

It’s crucial to remind yourself of this and remember that what you buy now may not be so hot and trendy a few years or even months down the line. It can also be beneficial to weigh the pros and cons of buying into a trend.

Essentially, it could be a big waste of money when the trend is no longer trending. Sticking to buying timeless items is a better choice for your financial longevity.

Understand Why You Want To Buy Something

Thinking about why you are tempted to buy something is helpful to recognizing your thought patterns and maybe considering if you may have a spending issue that needs to be dealt with.

Ask Yourself a Few Questions

Before making any purchases outside of your daily needs, you should always ask yourself a couple of questions. These questions may include things along the lines of:

  • Do I need this?
  • Will it add value to my life?
  • Will it still be relevant X months or years later?
  • Is it damaging to the environment or the earth to buy this?
  • Why do I want to buy this?
  • Is this purchase going to affect my overall financial well-being?
