20 Celebrities Who Make Us Scratch Our Heads and Wonder “Why?”

Do you know what really grinds people’s gears these days? Those celebrities that everyone seems to go gaga over, but some of us can’t wrap our heads around why.

One Redditor asked, “What celebrity will you never understand the appeal of?” Thousands of users commented on this post, but we have compiled your ultimate list!

1. Salt Bae

A Turkish chef named Nusret Gokce (Salt Bae) has become an Internet phenomenon and slicing a steak and then fancifully throwing salt onto it.

A discerning Reddit user commented, “The stuff he pulled with Messi at the World Cup was the cringiest.”

Another replied, “All he does is sprinkle stuff on some meat and call it a day.”

People are losing it over his salt-spreading skills, but we also sprinkle salt on our fries every day, and we are not trending on Twitter.

2. Logan Paul

LOS ANGELES - AUG 13: Logan Paul at the Teen Choice Awards 2017 at the Galen Center on August 13, 2017 in Los Angeles, CA.

One said, “Logan Paul (or any of the other “YouTube!” celebrities and “influencers”). Doesn’t take much nowadays to become famous.”

This user added, “Anyone has the power to be a loser these days! and if you’re the right kind of loser, you can somehow be famous. What? Lol”

Sure, he’s got a lot of energy and made some viral videos, but remember that whole controversy about filming a dead body in the “suicide forest”? That should’ve been a career-ender, right? Nope, he’s still going strong.

3. Chris Brown

LOS ANGELES - FEB 10: Chris Brown arrives to the 2013 Grammy Awards on February 10, 2013 in Hollywood, CA.

A Reddit user wrote, “Chris Brown, dude is a know domestic assaulter yet for some god awful reason he ain’t in jail & he still loved by many.”

Another person pitched in to say, “My sister-in-law is OBSESSED with Chris Brown. She said if she got the chance, she would definitely leave her husband for him. Even though, and I quote, ‘I know he’d beat me on a regular basis.’ I just can’t wrap my head around it.”

Talented? Absolutely. But his personal life is like a never-ending soap opera. From that Rihanna incident to constant legal troubles, you’d think people would stop supporting him. But no, he’s still selling out concerts.

4. The Kardashians

Someone commented, “Any Kardashian. They are only famous for being famous.”

Another person agreed to it and said, “That was also my answer. They do…nothing…and get paid for it…almost envy them, but there’s nothing but plastic inside each and every one of them.”

Yet, millions of people are glued to their antics. Is it the drama? The outrageous lifestyle? Or is it just a fascination with contouring makeup? Who knows, but it’s a mystery some may never crack.

5. James Charles

One shared, “James Charles. No explanation is required. Edit: Google this entity at your own risk. OP, the sub, and Reddit are not liable for any trauma resulting from doing so.”

Another replied, “His entire appeal, and the appeal of a lot of this brand of online celebrity, relies entirely on being a cute gay boy who’s good with makeup. One of the least threatening and most welcoming audiences for teenage girls, aka the boyband demographic.”

From feuds with other influencers to controversies about sponsorships, it’s hard to keep up. But you know what they say: any publicity is good publicity, right?

6. Andrew Tate

Apparently, he’s a kickboxing champ, but it seems like he spends more time stirring up controversy online than throwing punches in the ring.

One said, “Andrew Tate. I hate the way he talks; it is similar to people chewing with their mouths open.”

Another person pitched in to say, “His target audience is 14-year-olds who think they are better than everyone else. He teaches them how to be “alpha males,” and he reinforces their beliefs about being better than everyone, how society sucks and how someone ( aka he ) should do something about it.

He uses popular terms like the matrix to describe it because it’s something most of his fans are familiar with but don’t really know what it means. Basically, he created a cult around brainwashing 14-year-olds, and he is somehow not behind bars.”

7. Jared Leto

LOS ANGELES - MAR 17: Jared Leto arrives for Apple's 'WeCrashed' Global Premiere on March 17, 2022 in Los Angeles, CA.

Now, Jared Leto- the man of a thousand faces and even more hairstyles.

A discerning Reddit user commented, “Jerod Leto is a lunatic. And an awful actor. So weird to me.”

Another person agreed to it and said, “I don’t know jack about celebrities, but my roommate had the Oscars on one year. Ellen Degeneres went to take a selfie of a bunch of celebrities, and Leto booked it from the other side of the theater to be a part of it. He practically pushed people out of the way. The whole thing looked so pathetic and desperate, and I never liked him since.”

8. Jimmy Fallon

One said, “I never thought people thought Jimmy Fallon was funny even when he was on SNL, not my cup of tea.”

Another replied, “Still can’t believe that NFT scam he promoted with Paris Hilton. Gobsmacked!”

Is it the games? The silly skits? Someone, please explain the appeal.

9. Will Smith

A Reddit user wrote, “Will Smith isn’t funny, and I am weirded out by him and a lot of those SNL people ever since the Horatio Sanz scandal…sounds like they were okay with Sanz grooming the teenager.”

This user added, “I don’t find Will Smith comedic either, to be completely honest.”

Maybe it’s his charisma or his eternal youth, but sometimes it feels like we’re trapped in the Will Smith Matrix.

10. Gwyneth Paltrow

Goop, anyone? She’s the queen of all things fancy and bougie, but her lifestyle brand sometimes feels more like a parody than a legitimate business.

Someone commented, “Gwyneth Paltrow. She’s tall and thin and not ugly, but definitely not very pretty. She also usually plays parts that have similar personalities to hers. She never plays challenging roles. I suppose having famous parents in the industry got her foot in the door. Also, her Goop stuff is so stupid to me.”

Someone added, “I can’t STAND HER! she was talking about what she eats in a day, and it’s basically nothing! she glorifies Another person pitched in to say, eating disorders!”

11. Taylor Swift

Now, we know she’s got a massive fan base and all, but the constant “heartbreak to hit song” cycle gets old.

One shared, “Taylor Swift. She’s not a bad singer, but I don’t see what’s so special about her.”

Another replied, “Baffles me. I don’t think she’s bad by any stretch; it’s the level of adoration and devotion I don’t quite understand. I am very likely missing something and could perhaps sit down with all her albums one day and find what the fuss is all about. But there’s never been any tune of hers I’ve heard that’s made me inclined to do that.”

12. Andy Dick

LOS ANGELES - NOV 10: Andy Dick at the T-Mobile Un-carrier X Launch Celebration at the Shrine Auditorium on November 10, 2015 in Los Angeles, CA.

Then there’s Andy Dick, the king of cringe comedy.

One said, “Andy Dick. He’s not funny. He’s annoying. And he killed Phil Hartman.”

Another person agreed to it and said, “Andy Dick is a subhuman piece of garbage. Omg I hate his stupid face! Just the sight of him irritates me!”

13. Donald Trump

The man was a reality TV star turned president- talk about a plot twist. People either love him or loathe him, and some are just here scratching their heads, wondering how he became such a polarizing figure.

A discerning Reddit user commented, “Trump. And I don’t say this because of his politics. I simply wonder what has he ever truly accomplished or done to add value to the world?”

Another person pitched in to say, “Before he ran for president, I swear to god I never heard this name or knew who he was for my entire life up until that point. So I’m kinda glad I never had a positive view of him and have only ever seen him as the creep he should be viewed as.”

14. Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise, the action movie legend. Sure, he does his own stunts and all, but have you ever noticed how he runs in every single movie?

A Reddit user wrote, “Tom Cruise. I cannot fathom how people can overlook how utterly crazy he is and willingly drop 30 bucks and two hours of their time on a movie ticket and popcorn, and some Junior Mints to watch his films. Just looking at the guy makes my skin crawl.”

Another replied, “I do not know him, never met him, avoid anything with him in the cast. I don’t understand what people find appealing about his films.”

15. Chevy Chase

This guy was a comedy legend back in the day, but lately, it feels like he’s more known for being a grumpy dude. His reputation for being difficult to work with precedes him, and it’s a bit of a buzzkill.

One said, “Chevy Chase was pretty good at portraying the bad straight man in comedy. Turns out it was because that’s who he is, not because he’s a good actor.”

Another person agreed to it and said, “It takes a special kind of Chevy Chase to be banned from hosting the show that gave him his big break.”

16. Ariana Grande

Someone commented, “Ariana Grande. Her personality is kinda annoying, and she’s done questionable things.”

This user added, “I went to see her live. What a mistake. Left early because her show was sooo boring. Just because she can’t dance, her dancers weren’t allowed to either. They just skipped around the stage like a bunch of idiots. Worse still, there was no live band. Sounded like she just played a backing track and sung over it.”

And the constant whisper-singing- are you a fan of it?

17. Pete Davidson

LOS ANGELES - MAR 18: Pete Davidson arrives for the Netflix 'The Dirt' Premiere on March 18, 2019 in Hollywood, CA.

One shared, “Pete Davidson. What do hot chicks see in him?”

Another person pitched in to say, “This was the answer I was coming here for. He looks like he works at a shady gas station, and all these smoking hot ladies keep dating him. I don’t get it at all.”

Pete Davidson- the comedian with a charm that seems to baffle everyone. Maybe it’s his self-deprecating humor or his knack for dating A-listers, but some people can’t quite figure out why he’s such a hot topic.

18. Lizzo

A Reddit user wrote, “She abused the “accept everyone” train and then abused the people people working for her.”

Another replied, “Before her latest controversy, I tried to like her. But her putting her bare body on fast food counters to twerk and her body on seats at NBA games just turned me off from her. Like, don’t be gross, please.”

Are you on Team Lizzo, or do you not understand her hype?

19. Amy Schumer

New York, NY - August 8, 2018: Amy Schumer attends BlogHer18 creators summit Women inspiring women at Pier 17.

Amy Schumer is a comedian who’s known for pushing boundaries.

One said, “Amy Schumer. Her Netflix special was so bad it is responsible for Netflix removing user rating.”

Another person agreed to it and said, “She has a history of stealing other people’s jokes and lines, and people just consider her not as funny as the media portray her to be. Personally speaking, I don’t find MOST comedians funny. For me, it’s funnier when the joke genuinely comes out of one’s mouth.”

20. Beyonce

A discerning Reddit user commented, “Beyonce. Is it me, or did she carry the “you goooo guuuuuurl” baton too many decades.”

Another person pitched in to say, “FINALLY!!!!! I was looking to see if someone had already mentioned her. Maybe in my 20s, I thought it was good, but her music is summarized by blah blah can’t handle this, blah blah too much woman for you, blah blah aint no man good enough for this, blah blah best be get to steppin’ blah blah if you aint respectin blah blah.”

She’s got talent, no doubt, but some people treat her like she’s walking on water. Maybe it’s the whole “Beyhive” thing or the way she effortlessly drops surprise albums, but we’ll forever be baffled by her level of fame.
