8 Ways Frugal Homeowners Can Save Money on Their Energy Bill

Given the current state of affairs in the world, we should all try to reduce energy usage whenever possible. This will not only save some money on energy bills but also fight global warming and reduce air pollution.

Here, we have listed all how you can reduce your energy bill, which will not only save you some coin but will hopefully help the planet a little bit of a better place, too.

Turn It Off

Putting lights off that we aren’t using is a great way to reduce energy usage, but we are referring to turning off any appliances when you don’t use them. This includes computers, televisions, cable boxes, video game consoles, etc. Having these devices plugged in and on when you aren’t using them is chowing your energy expenses.

Invest in Smart Lightbulbs

LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs are the only way to go if you want to reduce energy usage for lighting. These smart bulbs use up to 85% less energy to produce light than their traditional counterparts.

Only Use Appliances When Needed

Powering a dishwasher or a washing machine when it’s not fully loaded is a terrible way to waste energy. Be sure that these appliances only operate when they are fully loaded.

The same amount of energy is used to run a full washer compared to a half-full one, so it’s really in your best interest to only use these appliances when they are full if you want to save energy.

Choose Energy Efficient Appliances

By opting for home appliances that are energy efficient, it’s possible to save up to 50% in energy costs when running these appliances. It’s important to ensure that these appliances are certified as being energy efficient, and this is usually illustrated with special stickers.

Adjust Temperature Settings

It’s great to buy the most energy-efficient appliances, but your energy usage is largely dependent on the settings you select for your water heater, air conditioner, and heater.

There’s no need to crank the AC to the point of creating sweater weather in summer, and setting your heater so high in winter that you can roam around inside with a T-shirt is also not great for your energy-saving quest.

Seal the Cracks

By ensuring that all the cracks around your doors and windows are properly sealed, you could optimize the efficiency of your heater and air conditioner. Just a small opening is all it takes to disrupt the hard work of these appliances.

Shower More Than Bathing

Bathing is a great way to get clean, but it’s also an expensive route to take to get clean. Showers use far less water, and therefore, less energy is going into heating the water. By switching baths and opting for showers, you can reduce your energy bill quite significantly.

Wash Clothes in Cold Water

The only time one should wash one’s clothes in hot water is when one is trying to sanitize them, such as when a family member is sick. If you are someone who is using hot water to wash your clothes every time, then you are wearing your clothes faster and wasting energy, which is completely unnecessary.
