Get More Done by Doing Less: 5 Ways to Embrace Essentialism

It’s so easy to get overwhelmed in today’s world with the never-ending lists of tasks and responsibilities we constantly need to get through. Perhaps you need to start incorporating essentialism principles into your life to do less but still get things done.

Essentialism is all about putting your focus on the essentials in life by eliminating the small things that just bring about noise and chaos. It’s also all about maximizing your time and reserving your energy for the necessary things, and in doing so, you will simplify your life. Read on to learn more about how you can embrace essentialism.

Identify Priorities

Essentialism is all about putting your energy towards vital things. You will only know what these things are if you start by evaluating your life and outlining your major priorities.

This doesn’t mean that you can kiss all your responsibilities goodbye; it just simply means that you can stop doing the things in your life that don’t add much value or the things that drain your time and energy. If you feel that certain social obligations no longer serve a good purpose in your life, then perhaps you can start by cutting these out.

Reduce Time Spent on Non-Essential Tasks

Taking a look at how you spend your time is one of the cornerstones of embracing essentialism. If you find that a large part of your day or week consists of doing non-essential tasks, then it could be a good idea to cut back on these tasks to make room for more essentialism practices in your life.

It’s Okay to Say No

To fully embrace essentialism, it’s okay to say ‘no’ from time to time. It may look something like saying ‘no’ to a request for a favor or potential plans with friends. It can also mean saying ‘no’ to an indulgent meal or shopping spree, which may not add much value to your life. Either way, sometimes in life, we have to know when to say ‘no,’ and that’s okay too.

Simplify Your Environment

Another important aspect of embracing essentialism is to simplify your immediate environment. If you feel like your home is filled with a bunch of things that are either taking up too much space or no longer serving a purpose, then it could be really helpful to start decluttering.

By decluttering your home, you open up space, which can also have a great effect on your sanity and mental well-being.

After embracing essentialism, you may find that you have more time to do the things that matter more to you. You will also probably have a lot more downtime. This is something to be celebrated, and it can be done by seeking the small joys in life and taking the time to celebrate them.

This can be done by taking a slow walk in a park or treating yourself to an ice cream or a takeout coffee, because why not?
