5 Frugal Living Tips I Was Embarrassed To Try (But Loved)

We don’t live in a culture that thinks being extra-frugal is cool.

That’s fortunately changing, as is how much people care about being “cool” over having more cash.

And I think now’s the time to talk about how glad I was to ignore the naysayers, manage my shame, and save a ton of money by finally trying these five frugal hacks for myself.

P.S. If you’re serious about saving money, you’ll love my Frugal Living Planner — I use it myself and it’s a total game-changer and it’s only $10!

Hang-Drying My Clothes Outside

I know my neighbors don’t want to see my unmentionables hanging on a clothesline outside. But I gathered up the gumption to hang up everything else, like bedsheets and towels.

Once I got used to it, I realized that this was my space, and caring what someone else thought about hanging my clothes wasn’t worth the extra money I was spending on my utilities.

Now (weather permitting), I hang dry almost all my clothes, and I’m never looking back.

Making My Own Cleaning Products

I don’t know why this felt so embarrassing — it’s not much different from making anything else yourself. Something about it screamed like I was cleaning with something less effective or subpar.

I was wrong; my homemade cleaners got everything as clean as I’d hoped and made my home smell impossibly fresh instead of like the inside of a research facility.

I usually just use vinegar, baking soda, and whatever citrus I have lying around, and it works like a charm.

Swapping, Not Shopping

I was embarrassed to suggest a clothing swap with friends, fearing it might seem cheap. I didn’t ask my friends their thoughts on my journey through my frugality-induced shame minefield, either. I was surprised and delighted to see most of them give an enthusiastic yes!

We refreshed our wardrobes without spending a dime. And I got to see many of the clothes that served me well over the years go to a happy home. I’m so glad I took the risk, and I feel like my friends loved the experience, too.

Thrifting for Everything

My friends and I frequently go thrifting for clothes. But thrifting for other things, like electronics or home goods, felt like a bridge too frugal. Now I realize I was being silly; I adore thrifting for everything I need.

It feels like I’m hunting for treasure, and I’ve found some original and antique items for cents on the dollar. People are starting to notice my creative eye for things and asking me where I got something because they love it so much!

Leveraging the Library

The library didn’t feel “embarrassing,” necessarily. It just didn’t seem all that worth it, like it was a place more meant for students. But when I signed up for a library card, my world changed.

From free books to movies and even online courses, I’ve saved a fortune on entertainment while expanding my knowledge on the things that matter to me. Going to the library is also a fun way to kill a few hours, and it’s 100% free. I honestly feel embarrassed that I didn’t think to go there sooner.
