Netflix canceled Lockwood & Co on May 12th, 2023. This news has been received with an uproar because many of its fans eagerly awaited season 2.
Amelia Fortunato, one of the disappointed Lockwood & Co fans, started one of the biggest petitions ever hosted by Change.org. At the time of writing this, the petition was standing at 13 269 and was on the road to 15,000 signatures.
Lockwood & Co Background
Lockwood & Co is a supernatural detective thriller TV series adapted from Jonathan Stroud’s book series, also going by the same name. The book series is composed of 5 books: The Screaming Staircase, The Whispering Skull, The Hollow Boy, The Creepy Shadow, and The Empty Grave, all of which were published between 2013 and 2017.
The series tells a story of a time when ghosts could be seen, but only by children. There also existed ghost hunting agencies all over England, one of which the main protagonist is hired to work for.
Netflix users received the first episode well, and it quickly went straight to the platform’s list of Hall of Fame.
Complete Fiction, the production company behind the eight episodes, released a lengthy statement affirming that there will be no season 2 despite the first episode’s success.
In their statement, they thanked Jonathan Stroud for trusting them to adapt his books into film and also thanked the huge Lockwood & Co fanbase.
Why Was Lockwood & Co Canceled?
This series was very liked and widespread within its fandom. For instance, it acquired 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive 94% audience score.
The first season debuted on Netflix’s number-one TV show, with over 40 million hours of viewership. And yes, it was on top of lists for weeks.
With some of the cast members and production team expressing that they would love to get into season 2, it is devastating for them to take in the sad news.
According to Amelia Fortunato, it is clear that Netflix is not treating its workers properly. She adds that stopping this show means hundreds of people will lose their jobs, which also shows how inconsiderate they can be. She urges people to hold Netflix accountable and stop them from treating their shows like this.
People’s Reason for Signing the Petition
In the petition, Amelia states that Netflix has been terrible when it comes to marketing their TV shows but won’t hesitate to cancel them.
One of the signees was in agreement with Amelia as their reason for signing was, “Ruby Stokes got out of Bridgerton to play Lucy Carlyle, for heaven’s sake, and Netflix didn’t bother to promote it like Shadow and Bone. C’mon, they all deserve better than getting axed after the first season.”
Another signee said, “Favorite book series brought to life with incredible adaption. It was number 1 on Netflix in 18 countries around the world. It deserves a second season.”
It Deserved More
Another said, “This show has restored my faith in the book to film adaptation.”
“This show deserves to have run longer. The adaptation was spot-on to the book, and the acting was phenomenal. So few family-friendly shows out there today (especially on Netflix) for people to connect with; this one has so much story left to be told,” Said another signee.
And lastly, “This show means so much to so many people; it reached the top 1 in 18 countries and didn’t happen by accident. And the fans deserve a second season to see the already relatable characters brought back to life.”
