Nowadays, smartphones have such powerful hardware that we can pretty much do anything, from watching a movie to recording mini-movies at the tip of our fingers. Smarter smartphones mean bigger and better batteries, although sometimes it feels like our batteries don’t last very long. One thing that may actually be hindering one’s battery life is all the power-hungry apps.
There are literally millions of apps out there, and they haven’t all been created equally. Some of them have the ability to chow down on your battery at astronomical rates. This can occur while using the apps or simply while the apps are running in the background. To learn more about these apps, read on.
1. TikTok
After playing mobile games, video streaming is the second most battery-consuming activity that one can do on their smartphone. This is due to the constant bright and active screen that runs while simultaneously burning through cellular data or wi-fi. Loading video after video also takes a lot of work for your phone’s hardware. TikTok is entertaining, but don’t be surprised that it’s chowing your battery when you spend an hour or more on this app.
2. YouTube
YouTube is also a commonly used app that has the ability to eat at one’s battery life. Much like TikTok, the app also streams videos – the only difference is that the videos are a bit longer. The longer videos tend to drain less battery life than TikTok’s short-form content, although the app passively drains the battery in the background as it’s constantly checking for new content that you may want to watch.
3. Mobile Games
Playing games is the fastest way to lose battery life on any phone. To mitigate this, one could tone down the graphics settings, although it may mean that the visuals get downgraded. Dimming one’s screen can also alleviate the loss of battery. These steps may work a little bit to conserve battery when gaming on your phone, but game apps will always be the most demanding thing that drains battery life on a mobile device.
4. Instagram
Instagram has evolved from the beginning to showcasing images only, and now it’s a full-throated platform that includes stories, shopping, messaging, and so much more. There is so much functionality packed into this app, so it really shouldn’t come as a surprise that your battery life nosedives after using this app. Furthermore, this app can also take advantage of one’s location services, and it collects data to send you notifications, which will chomp down on your battery even when you are not using the app.
5. Spotify
We’re sorry for all the music fans, but sadly, Spotify also has the ability to munch away at one’s battery. The app does a lot of work, like updating playlists and keeping music synced, to name a few, and this all happens even when you are not using the app.
6. Facebook
Facebook made it onto this list because the app constantly consumes data to send advertisements and provide you with the latest updates from your Facebook friends and the pages you follow.
7. Google Maps
Google Maps is one of those sneaky apps that uses battery even when you aren’t using the app. This happens because the app uses live GPS navigation, location services, and so much more.
