Want some scary facts to creep you out?
So, you know how life has its fair share of weirdness, right?
And with this comes a list of creepy facts that can send a shiver down your spine! From eerie historical events to bizarre occurrences that make you question reality, the world is filled with quite a few spine-tingling stories.
Want to know some of the creepiest facts ever? Here you go!
1. Box Jellyfish
Box Jellyfish are not only the most venomous jellyfish to humans, but they also possess at least 24 functional eyes (of various degrees) on their body despite having no centralized brain. Four of its eyes always peer up out of the water regardless of the animal’s body position; some eyes can make out images, while others are more primitive.
They’re the most venomous jellyfish to humans, and get this – they’re rocking at least 24 eyes!
2. Hearing
Hearing is the last sense you lose before dying. There are stories of people who are almost dead, and they say that they always hear people talking while they are being brought “back to life”.
Who knew death had a soundtrack?
3. Bedsheet Murder
Moving on to a bedtime horror story – hundreds of people meet their demise every year, and not from skydiving accidents or wrestling with crocodiles. Nope, it’s the bedsheet rebellion.
Hundreds of people die every year… from being strangled by their bedsheets.
Someone shared their own personal horror story online, “I had a heavy blanket that was pretty much coming apart at the seams. The lining was detaching from the blanket itself. I woke up one morning and found my son’s head/neck completely entangled in the detached lining. I shook him in a panic, and he woke up confused but fine. It looked as if someone had actually taken the thing and tried to strangle him with it.”
4. Cheese Bacteria
If all bacteria in a cheese decided to move in the same direction, the cheese would move quite a distance in a day.
The French actually have a way of speaking about those very smelly, runny camembert. When they open the fridge, and they’re basically liquid and aggressively smelly, they just go, “Ouf; this one is going for a walk.””
Cheese on the move – now that’s a Gouda story.
5. Dogs Have Eyebrows
Due to human artificial selection, dogs are evolving eyebrows.
Who’s a good boy with killer eyebrows? Apparently, every dog ever.
6. Walking Corpse Syndrome
Walking corpse syndrome is a condition where you just think you’re dead or don’t exist. People who have it sometimes stop eating because they think they’re dead.
People with this condition genuinely believe they’re six feet under, even though they’re just strolling down the street.
7. Robert Lincoln
Now, let’s dive into the twisted family ties of the Lincolns.
In a strange and semi-creepy coincidence, Robert Lincoln, son of Abraham Lincoln, was saved from falling off a train platform and being run over by Edwin Boothe, brother of John Wilkes Boothe.
8. Immune System
Your eyes have their own immune system that works separately from your body’s immune system. If your body’s immune system finds out, it will attack your eyes.
Fun fact: your body’s immune system will attack all kinds of things you need to live and try and kill you if it goes rogue.
Who knew eyeballs were such rebels?
9. Butterflies
Moving on to the world of butterflies – those delicate, fluttery creatures that grace our gardens.
But butterflies aren’t as “innocent” as you think: if given access to it, butterflies will happily drink blood.
Butterflies will drink blood from roadkill!
10. Toilets
Yep, one of the most common spots to stumble upon a dead body is right there in the bathroom. One of the most common places to find a dead body is on the toilet. Because when they’re alive and not feeling well, the first thing they do is go to the toilet, thinking it could be a bowel issue. Then, quite often, they’ll collapse and fall into that little gap between the toilet and the wall, and you can’t get them out to do CPR.
Yep, one of the most common spots to stumble upon a dead body is right there in the bathroom.
11. Cadaver Dogs
Imagine being a detective and having a canine sidekick that can solve crimes even in the deep end!
Cadaver dogs can smell bodies through waters (lakes, etc). A particularly creepy fact is that after the 9/11 attack, cadaver dogs started alerting several blocks away from the site because the air was full of the scent of dead bodies.
12. Sloth’s Claws
A sloth’s claws aren’t actually made of creatine, they’re their finger bones protruding from their flesh.
Next time you see a sloth hanging around, just remember those claws are the real deal!
13. Too Much Water
We all need to drink a lot of water but…drinking too much water can kill you. Some people who have survived drowning later die because of water intoxication. The solution is simple: give them salt or electrolyte fluids to balance their sodium pH in the body.
This is a problem at raves after taking ecstasy. People would start freaking out and think if they drank water, they would be ok but instead killed themselves with the amount of water.
Hydration is key, they say, but apparently, there’s a limit before your body goes on strike.
14. Pharmacies
It’s against the law for a pharmacist to tell seniors on part D that they are paying 2.5 times the cost for metformin than someone off the street with no insurance. In my hypothetical transaction, the drug costs the pharmacy $2, and HE charges $4.
If Grandma comes in with either Medicare card, she is charged a $10 copay. The drug maker then takes $7, leaving the pharmacy with a profit margin of $3 instead of $4. He is bound by law to say nothing about the scam.
You’d think having insurance would be your ticket to affordable medication, right? Wrong.
15. Death of a Star
When a star decides it’s time to retire, it goes out with a bang. Literally.
When a star dies, it explodes and releases a gamma burst, which destroys everything in its path. If one goes off near Earth, it will lead to extinction, and there is no warning because it happens immediately.
This was actually once a very popular theory about why the dinosaurs died out. Seems way more interesting than a giant meteor.
16. Super Volcanoes
There are about 40 super volcanoes in the world that have yet to erupt. One super volcano is in Yellowstone National Park, which has a magma chamber that is large enough to fit the entire city of Tokyo inside it.
Freaked out? Don’t worry; there are people on the case. They are all under pretty firm surveillance because scientists are rather aware of the danger they pose. So, any eruptions won’t take us by surprise.
Who knows when one of them is going to decide it’s showtime?
17. Demodex
Meet the Demodex mites – the uninvited guests you never knew you had. You have millions of mites, known as Demodex, living on your face. An overrun of Demodex mites is thought to be the cause of rosacea.
18. Bear Attacks
Survivors spill the beans on the bone-chilling detail that haunts their nightmares – the sound of bear teeth scraping against their skulls.
Many victims who survive bear attacks report the sound of the bear’s teeth scraping against their skulls.
19. Hypothermia
Now, let’s venture into the territory of skinned-alive scenarios.
If you get skinned alive, you’ll die from hypothermia, not blood loss. There was a video of a cartel member cutting some guy’s face off while he was still alive; he did die after a short time, though he lived much longer than one would have expected.
20. Black Holes
During the merger of two black holes, a black hole can occasionally get ejected from the system and get shot out into open space and become a wandering black hole; the creepy part is that because a large part of the way in which we see black holes is through their interactions with their surroundings, we wouldn’t really be able to see it coming towards us.
This is pretty disturbing and one of the creepiest facts on this page so far (so why did we leave it for last?). Imagine one day, the sun just disappears. Then maybe the moon, then us. Crazy to imagine, but it could actually happen.
Who knew black holes could be interstellar rebels?
