Are you tired of being fooled by companies and their marketing tactics?
You’re not alone.
A growing number of people are waking up to the reality that some of the most normalized expenses in everyday life are, at their core, elaborate rip-offs.
Here are 18 things that many consider to be one giant scam.
The Baby Industry
The whole baby product industry is based on making parents feel worthless and irresponsible if they don’t shell out for things that will be outgrown or become unnecessary in just six months.
Fear-based marketing runs deep in this space, and new parents often pay the price. No, you don’t need all those things. In fact, you’re better off without them.

Ink Cartridges for Printers
Ink cartridges are super cheap to manufacture, but the retail price is extremely high.
And that’s not even the real scam. The real scam is chipping the cartridges to make it nearly impossible to use third-party alternatives, locking consumers into expensive brand-name refills for the life of the printer.
And have you heard the new scam about printers? Well, read the next one.
Subscriptions
Subscription-based models have taken over nearly every industry.
While it’s understandable when a product requires constant updates, the sheer volume of mandatory subscriptions consumers are now expected to maintain has become its own kind of monopoly.
Now, even printers come with a subscription. And if you don’t pay, then you can’t use the printer that you bought.
Corporate-Owned Apartment Complexes
Corporate-owned apartment complexes tack on hundreds of extra dollars in monthly fees on top of rent: mandatory cable TV packages, parking fees on flat surface lots with no assigned parking, valet trash, and more.
It’s all just a way to pocket incremental revenue on top of what’s already being charged for rent.
One renter described being shocked to tour an apartment where tenants were required to purchase a $100+/month cable package, something virtually nobody uses anymore.
If you ever encounter fees like this, then double-check to see if it is in your lease and/or contract agreement. If it’s not in the lease, they can’t charge you a mandatory fee after you signed the lease.
Casinos
Modern casinos have shifted heavily toward video poker and video slot machines, with barely any table games left.
The result is a room full of people feeding machines and losing money, each convinced they’ve cracked the code to winning.
The new machines are designed to be extremely addictive. They have lights flash, sounds blare, and a screen announces “WINNER of 40 cents.”
The entire experience is a psychology hack designed to give people the impression they’re winning when they’re not.
Detox Products
Anything that claims it will “detox” your body is, scientifically speaking, doing a job your kidneys and liver already handle on their own.
The detox industry sells the illusion of a service your body provides for free.
Don’t waste your money on trendy detox items. Follow mainstream health advice instead.
“Magic” Weight-Loss Drinks
Any claim that a “magic” drink will help burn fat is a pure fabrication.
When people report weight loss from these products, the real explanation is simple: they were consuming around 200 calories a day for two weeks.
Starvation is, in fact, slimming. The brain fog, persistent nausea, and shaking aren’t “toxins leaving the body”; they are symptoms of severe caloric restriction.
Plastic Recycling
Less than 10% of plastic waste is actually recycled.
The plastic lobby has long been allowed to place the recycling symbol on materials regardless of whether they’re actually recyclable. Non-recyclable materials mixed into recycling streams slow down the process and damage equipment.
Single-use plastics, whose main ingredient is a derivative of fossil fuels like natural gas, remain one of the most damaging environmental products in widespread use.
So if you want to save the planet, cut down on plastics instead of relying on recycling.
Multi-Level Marketing Companies
All multi-level marketing companies operate on the same basic promise: get five people to sign up, and have each of them get five more, and so on.
The math, however, doesn’t hold up.
By the time you reach roughly 12 levels deep, you’ve mathematically surpassed the entire population of the Earth.
It’s a useful lesson in exponents and a costly one for most participants.
Corporate “We’re All in This Together” Messaging
During the pandemic, a wave of emails and messages from corporations and celebrities declared that “we are all in this together.”
The sentiment rang hollow for many.
As one pointed observation put it: “We are not all in the same boat. We are all in the same storm. Some are on super-yachts. Some have just the one oar.” Damien Barr.
Essential Oils as Medical Treatments
Essential oils marketed as treatments for illness or as having major health benefits are largely unsupported by evidence.
The one notable exception? Clearing sinuses.
Certain essential oils do appear to offer genuine relief in that regard, though results will vary from person to person.
Tax Filing in the U.S.
The government already has all the information it needs to file taxes on behalf of most Americans, yet taxpayers are still required to do it themselves, often paying for services like TurboTax in the process.
The stated justification is that Americans prefer doing their own taxes, a claim that is widely disputed.

Bottled Water
Bottled water is one of the most marked-up consumer products on the market.
Perhaps most striking: there is actually less water in the bottle than the amount of water required to produce it.
The Lottery
The lottery operates as a near-perfect loss loop.
Regular players often trade winning tickets back in for more tickets, spending more money chasing bigger wins, stuck in an endless cycle.
Even among those who do win big, many have spent far more than they ever recover.
Winning $1 to $100 feels insignificant to habitual players, yet the pursuit of a larger payout keeps them spending and losing consistently.
The Wedding Industry
Weddings have become one of the most expensive single-day events in modern life.
The costs rival, and in many cases exceed, a full semester of college tuition, even for those planning economically.
Both industries have seen dramatic price increases, but by many accounts, weddings have outpaced even higher education in cost growth.
Funeral Services
Funeral services are frequently criticized for preying on the grief of bereaved families.
While the ceremonies serve an important emotional function for the living, the pricing model takes advantage of people at their most vulnerable. Those who are grieving and in no position to shop around or negotiate.
Diamonds
Diamonds are one of the most successfully marketed products in history, with their perceived value far exceeding their actual scarcity or utility.
Alternatives like moissanite offer nearly identical appearance at roughly one-tenth the cost.
Other gemstones, like alexandrite, which changes color depending on the light, offer unique and far more affordable options for those willing to look beyond the diamond industry standard.
Sports Video Games (Especially FIFA)
Sports video games, particularly FIFA, have long been criticized for releasing what amounts to the same game year after year with updated rosters, new jerseys, and a different color scheme , all for a full $60 price tag.
But the deeper scam lies in the loot box gambling mechanics embedded in the game.
FIFA, in particular, is designed to look like a traditional video game while functioning at every turn like a casino, using predatory monetization practices to extract far more than the initial purchase price from players.
The common thread running through all of these is the same: industries leveraging psychology, misinformation, or monopolistic control to extract money from consumers who often don’t realize what’s happening until it’s too late. Awareness, as always, is the first step. So take your time and don’t waste your money.
