She Vacated Her Bedroom To Host Her In-laws for a Week but Was Called Selfish for Asking To Have Early Access to It on Her Wedding Day

Would you be a jerk for asking for full and early access to your bedroom on your wedding day? This is especially after a week of leaving it to your in-laws and walking on eggshells while at it. OP dared to ask for hers back, but it only made her fall apart with her fiance.

Too Accommodating for Her Own Good?

The original poster (OP) is a 32-year-old woman who was getting married to her 34-year-old fiance. On the wedding day, OP was planning on getting ready with a few friends at her house.

OP’s in-laws arrived from another country slightly over a week before the wedding.

She Can’t Access Her Room

The master bedroom in OP’s house is downstairs, while the rest of the bedrooms are upstairs. Since OP’s MIL got injured, OP and her fiance decided to leave the bedroom downstairs for them.

They have been sleeping in the guestroom, and OP admits this is not a problem for her.

Her problem is that she cannot access her things when she wants them. OP sleeps late and wakes up early; it is what she is used to. His fiance and in-laws are, however, the exact opposite. They sleep early and like to sleep in.

Guest in Your Own House

So every morning, OP has to wait 4-5 hours before she can get a chance to get clean clothes and other personal items. Yes, she could get these items the evening before, but by the time she thinks of doing it, her in-laws are usually already asleep.

She says this makes her feel like a guest in her own house.

Feeling Overwhelmed

Besides, when she wakes up, she has to tiptoe around not to wake her MIL and FIL.

The situation was even more demanding because her fiance had traveled to another city to tailor his suit for his bachelor party. OP was, therefore, hosting her in-laws all by herself for days. On top of walking on eggshells, she has had to do additional things, such as cleaning up after them and fully taking over the last-minute wedding preparations.

She also just discovered that she was nine weeks pregnant, and her emotions and stress levels have been high.

Can I Have My Bedroom Back for My Wedding Morning?

OP says she was willing to keep up with this uncomfortable routine because her in-laws would be there for only a week.

The problem was all about the wedding day. OP’s friends were to come to do her make-up and hair before everyone else got ready. For this, they needed the master bedroom because it was bigger, and all the things they needed were in there.

The Blowup

The wedding was set to begin at noon, so OP had to be up preparing in the morning hours. She hoped to start preparations early to keep her stress level in check. Therefore, she called her fiance and asked him to ask his parents to wake up earlier on the wedding day to allow her to access her things and not stress out waiting for them to wake up.

His fiance was furious and called OP selfish for wanting his parents to wake up earlier on the wedding day.

Was OP reasonable, or was she an ***hole for wanting full access to her bedroom earlier on her wedding day?

The Masses Weigh In

The commenters came in with encouragement for OP and possible solutions to this problem. Read on for what people had to say.

Extremely Accommodating

One user thought OP had already gone out of her way to be hospitable to her in-laws, and it was not selfish to ask for her room back for the wedding morning. They said, “NTA, people need to get a grip. You’re already extremely accommodating, and it is not an unreasonable request to have access to your room on your wedding day!! I wouldn’t have let them stay there a week before the wedding, so you’re already very kind and patient.”

The Perfect Solution

A few commenters came up with possible solutions that could accommodate everyone.

One said, “You don’t need to bend backward ON YOUR OWN WEDDING DAY so that they can sleep in. Tell your fiance they need to get up early or get a hotel for that night. This is still YOUR home too.”

And lastly, “Tell fiancé you need the house for the wedding day, and he needs to get him and his parents hotel rooms…or they could just get the F up early: it’s a big day- and you need every second. So very NTA.”
