Campaign group MoveOn created a petition in November that calls for government officials to disqualify Trump from the 2024 presidential election on the grounds of violating the Constitution.

Violating the Fourteenth Amendment

Within two weeks of its creation, the petition gained 50,000 signatures, and as of Monday, more than 125,000 people have signed. MoveOn is hoping to garner 200,000 signatures. The petition alleges that Trump’s actions during and after the Capitol riot on January 6th violate the Fourteenth Amendment.

The petition references Article Three, which says that any person who “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” after taking a congressional oath should be barred from running for office. People who signed the petition were given the option to share their reason for doing so in the comments section of the descriptions page.

A Nation of Laws

Petition signer Jeanue S. said, “A peaceful demonstration is one thing. Destroying the capital and looking for people to harm plus destroying their offices is quite another. They should be prevented from running for any government position.”

Steven B. wrote, “Trump has violated the Constitution. Either we are a nation of laws…that believes in the Constitution…or we are not. Here’s our chance to say who we are.”

Criminal Conspiracy

The petition itself states that “Donald Trump and his associates planned, promoted, and paid for a criminal conspiracy that became the January 6 insurrection. We need to fight back even harder to hold Trump accountable for his actions to damage our democracy—actions that continue today and are focused on laying the groundwork for his next coup to place him in the White House in 2024, no matter the will of the voters.”

Repeat Offense

This instance is not the only time the Fourteenth Amendment has been wielded against political officials. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene and Representative Madison Cawthorn were accused of helping to incite an insurrection, and because of this, they should be banned from office.

A judge rejected the effort to bar Greene from office on the grounds of “insufficient evidence” to support the allegations of her helping to incite an insurrection. Cawthorn left office on her own after losing to Senator Chuck Edwards in the GOP primary.

Renewed Vigor

Even more individuals signed the petition after Trump called for the termination of the Constitution and continued to insist that the 2020 election was fraudulent. He took to Truth Social to state his opinion, writing, “So, with the revelation of MASSIVE & WIDESPREAD FRAUD & DECEPTION in working closely with Big Tech Companies, the DNC, & the Democrat Party, do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION?”

He continued, “Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution. Our great ‘Founders’ did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!”
