Liz Cheney Considers Presidential Run, Labels Trump Most Dangerous Threat

In a recent interview, former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., left the door open to a potential presidential run in 2024. Cheney, a prominent critic of Donald Trump within the Republican Party, described him as the “single most dangerous threat” to the nation’s security.

Expressing Concerns

During her tenure as vice chair of the House Jan. 6 committee, Cheney emphasized the committee’s findings, asserting that they unequivocally demonstrate Trump’s capacity to undermine the foundations of American democracy. She firmly stated that he should not be allowed to become the next president, expressing concerns that, without checks and balances, he would carry out actions he had previously been restrained from by responsible figures in the Department of Justice and the White House Counsel’s Office.

Reluctance to Assist

It’s worth noting that back in June, Cheney had indicated her reluctance to take actions that might assist Donald Trump’s 2024 electoral ambitions. At that time, she remained cautious about revealing her intentions.

Furthermore, the Trump campaign did not provide an immediate response to NBC News’ request for comment regarding Cheney’s remarks.

Cheney’s political journey has been marked by her active involvement in the Jan. 6 investigations and her willingness to break with the GOP establishment. Her decision to vote in favor of Trump’s impeachment in 2021 ultimately led to her removal from her leadership position within the House GOP and her subsequent defeat in the 2022 primary by a candidate backed by Trump, Harriet Hageman.

When questioned about a potential presidential run in 2024 on Sunday, Cheney firmly declared, “No, I’m not.” She also pledged to actively support other candidates in the upcoming election.

Cheney outlined her commitment, stating, “I will tell you what I’m definitely going to do. I’m going to spend the next year, between now and the election, certainly helping to elect serious people, helping to elect sane people to Congress.” She emphasized her willingness to back candidates from both the Republican and Democratic parties, highlighting the importance of preventing a scenario where the election outcome could be decided by the House of Representatives and potentially allow Donald Trump to return to the Oval Office.

Transcending Partisan Divisions

In the current political climate, Cheney stressed the necessity of transcending partisan divisions. She underscored the need for individuals who uphold the Constitution to unite in their efforts to prevent Trump from ever having a chance to occupy the presidency again, stating, “We are facing a moment in American politics where we have to set aside partisanship, and we have to make sure that people who believe in the Constitution are willing to come together to prevent him from ever again setting foot anywhere near the Oval Office.”
