Internet Users Justified His Decision to Lock the Door To Prevent His Girlfriend From Leaving Through It

OP, a 22-year-old man, lives with his 21-one-year-old girlfriend in a rural area. His girlfriend loves going for walks in the middle of the night and leaving the door wide open. OP decided to take drastic measures in the hope that it would make the whole thing safer for them, but they only ended up fighting about it.

He posted about it on “AITA,” narrating what transpired between him and his partner.

Forgetful Tendencies

According to OP, his girlfriend could be having some level of ADHD because she is incredibly forgetful and careless. She often forgets her purses, books, phone, and keys in the car. She also boils an egg on the stove and only remembers when the water has completely evaporated.

He adds that this is common with other appliances too.

She often says she will get a professional diagnosis and medication but never does.

The house they live in belonged to OP’s grandma, and OP had initially been living in it alone. When she moved in, they agreed to jointly pay the utilities, taxes, and bills, which is an arrangement that has been working well for them. OP says it has been great, apart from the little forgetful tendencies from his girlfriend.

Late Night Walks

The major problem is that she likes to leave the house for walks in the middle of the night. And she is always gone for hours while at it. They have had disagreements, and OP reminded her how these walks could be dangerous and how uncomfortable they make him, but she kept going anyway.

Typically, she leaves around 1-2 am and takes an hour walking around the neighborhood of the rural area. Sometimes, she leaves with her phone on low battery.

OP has no idea why she does this, but she claims she does it to exercise and enjoys the solitude of taking walks at that time.

She likes walking alone and does not appreciate OP coming with her. But that is not just it; she leaves the backdoor open on her way out because she has yet to get her keys.

Not Through the Backdoor

OP had had enough of her leaving the door open, so he decided to permanently lock the backdoor. This will then force his girlfriend to use the front door if she wants to go for her walks. He knows she would not dare leave the front door open in the middle of the night. This has, however, caused a rift between them as she ended up calling him a controlling ***hole and has not been talking to him.

The commenters on this thread thought that neither OP nor his girlfriend was the ***holes.

One said, “I say NAH (no ***holes here) because your gf isn’t doing anything bad or wrong, and you’re not locking her in the house if she can leave via the front door.”

Another group of commenters thought that they both had to step up for their safety.

They said, “Clearly though, both of you have things to work on: you have to recognize it’s your responsibility to give her a set of keys and not her responsibility to get yours copied (like wtf is that), and she needs to acquiesce to some safety points to make sure you don’t worry, like always having a full charge on her phone, having a r{safety}  whistle on her, or some other such compromise between you.”
