She Created a “Jacket of Shame” for Any Guest That Would Wear White at Her Wedding: It Worked Pretty Well

How do you deal with guests who wear white at a wedding? Use the classic “accidental” red wine on the dress? Well, that may work, but there is certainly a new trick in town. OP made a post on “Two Hot Takes” narrating how she successfully barred her mother-in-law from wearing white at her wedding…and it worked pretty well.

The Hustle of Wedding Preparation

OP, a 23-year-old woman, was getting married to her then-boyfriend of 3 years. She says she has never had any issues with her in-laws; they got along well.

Now, we all agree that planning for a wedding is a challenging fit and often results in some fights. In this case, OP had fights with both her mother and mother-in-law concerning things like decor, the style of the wedding gown, and what everyone would wear.

In the six months, she prepared for her wedding, she was very vocal about guests not wearing white at her wedding. Yes, you would think this is standard wedding etiquette, but you would be surprised. She kept telling her guests that they could wear any color they wanted but not white or anything else that would pass as white.

White Is the Color

Here comes the major problem: Her MIL constantly showed OP the dress she planned to wear, which was completely white. OP tried so many times to politely ask her to get a dress change, all in vain. For instance, she tried to nudge her in a different color direction, casually bringing up the no-white rule, and finally asked her then-fiance to ask his mother not to wear white, but all these did not just work out.

Expectation vs. Reality

Then MIL’s dress arrived, and OP happened to be there when the delivery was done. It wasn’t just any white dress but a literal wedding dress. Fortunately, to OP’s amazement, the dress was one of those “expectation vs. reality” moments, as it had terrible quality. MIL trashed it immediately. But she had other orders coming…

At this point, OP knew her MIL was determined to wear white. It was time to quickly find a way to prevent her from doing it.

The Jacket of Shame

OP then expressed her frustration to her sisters and bridesmaids, and they came up with the perfect idea: the jacket of shame.

OP’s sister helped her shop for the perfect jacket; think of the yellow reflective jackets construction workers wear. They then used glitter pens and colorful Sharpies to write on the jackets words like: “How dare you show up in white?” “Are you the bride? I. THINK. NOT”…

Unexpected Outcome

Afterward, she explained to her guests what the jacket would be used for; if someone showed up in white, they would be forced to wear the jacket from the moment they stepped into the venue, through the family photos, and would not be allowed to take it off.

Did she take it far? Maybe. But did it work? It did because her mother-in-law showed up in a “black funeral dress,” which was still a win for OP.

The Masses Weigh In

Is OP the ***hole for pulling out this move? Her MIL has been furious and shaming her for it ever since.

Here is what some Reddit users think.

Forced Compliance

One commenter thought MIL was planning to steal the spotlight from the bride. She was only furious because she was forced to comply. They said, “NTA. They’d still be pi**y about this because it forced their hand into complying with the (blatantly STANDARD and appropriate) dress code. I’d put all my money down on a bet that literally zero other guests were in any way offended by the jacket.”

Center of Attention

MIL is obsessed with attention and wants to “outshine” the bride. When she was forced to comply with the standard dress code, she still found her means, as one user said. “It was not about wearing the dress; this was about MIL making the day about her and controlling the event. While she didn’t get the same reactions she would have by wearing a white wedding dress, she still made sure to get reactions by wearing all black like she was attending a funeral, because heaven forbid she’s not in control and the center of attention for a day.”
