He Didn’t Invite HIS OWN FAMILY to His Brother’s Funeral Because of How They Treated Him, ‘You Deserved It’

A Reddit user shared his story of telling his family members, “you deserved it,” after they weren’t invited to his brother’s funeral.

Tragic Loss

The original poster (OP) explained that he has six siblings. They lost their father to brain cancer when his youngest brother was 13. His brother was devastated and was scarred deeply.

Both he and OP’s mother were severely depressed following his father’s passing. His brother managed to get into a good university, and shortly after going, he began to get involved in intimate relationships with older men.

He fell into a toxic cycle until he met one particular man who he fell in love with instantly. The man took OP’s brother under his wing and nurtured him, and protected him.

OP said he was suspicious of the relationship, but as time went on, he realized that it was real and was supportive. Their other families did not support the relationship and accused his partner of being a predator.

OP ended up being the only one involved in their wedding. OP said he also cut his other siblings off after they lost their mother in 2019.

At the beginning of 2021, OP’s brother discovered he had cancer, the same type as their father. He was diagnosed early, and had the surgery, but it came back 18 months later and spread faster.

The chemo stopped working, and he passed away on Christmas Eve surrounded by his loved ones. His brother asked that his funeral be arranged as OP and his family saw fit and added, “please don’t do anything will make you uncomfortable for anyone.”

OP made the decision not to invite any of his siblings. OP’s brother’s husband and in-laws were at the funeral, but no one from his family was invited.

They learned of his brother’s death after it was announced on the town’s Facebook page.

OP’s siblings were upset, and they tried to reach OP’s brother’s widow through his lawyer, but they could not, so they reached out to OP instead. OP told them they deserved this and that they were lucky they weren’t being charged with harassment.

The Masses Weigh In

The Reddit community was quick to rally behind OP.

One user said, “NTA. Your siblings sound basically hands off with your brother. Then with no real information decide Liam is a predator and start a campaign if harassment so bad a C&D is issued and your brother cuts them out of his life. They weren’t invited because they were strangers to him by then, through their own actions. That’s on them and it’s their guilt to deal with.”

Another added, “NTA. They didn’t cared about their brother, when he was alive. Why should the do when he is dead? And it sounds like your brother didn’t want him there. And it would be a bad situation for his husband. So it was okay.”

Was OP right not to invite his siblings to his brother’s funeral? Were the siblings right to be upset that they weren’t invited? How would you have reacted in this situation?
