In a surprising turn of events, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi found herself being asked to vacate her private Capitol office by the new speaker pro-tempore, Patrick McHenry, R-N.C.
McHenry, a staunch ally of the recently ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., issued the eviction order, marking one of his initial actions as the new top House lawmaker. This move sent shockwaves through the political landscape, signaling a significant shift in power dynamics within the House of Representatives.
Former Speaker Pelosi received an eviction notice via email.. The email informed her that her private space was being reallocated for the speaker’s office and requested her to vacate the area by the next day, warning that the room would undergo rekeying. On Tuesday, with assistance from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ staff, Pelosi relocated from her hideaway, as confirmed by her spokesperson.
Capitol hideaways, a coveted perk, have long been a Senate tradition, but they remain an exclusive privilege for a limited number of House members.
In a statement, Pelosi expressed her surprise, saying, “With all of the important decisions that the new Republican Leadership must address, which we are all eagerly awaiting, one of the first actions taken by the new Speaker Pro Tempore was to order me to immediately vacate my office in the Capitol. Sadly, because I am in California to mourn the loss of and pay tribute to my dear friend Dianne Feinstein, I am unable to retrieve my belongings at this time. This eviction is a sharp departure from tradition. As Speaker, I gave former Speaker [Dennis] Hastert a significantly larger suite of offices for as long as he wished.”
“Now that the new Republican Leadership has settled this important matter, let’s hope they get back to work on what’s truly important for the American people,” the statement said.
A Surprising Turn of Events
Pelosi’s eviction followed McCarthy’s removal from his seat through a motion to vacate. In a surprising turn, eight House Republicans, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, joined forces with all House Democrats to oust McCarthy from the speakership. Pelosi abstained from voting due to her presence in California, where she attended the burial of the late Senator Feinstein.
